American Astronaut. Pogue enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1951, serving for twenty-four years. He flew forty-three combat missions in Korea from 1953 until 1954. He served with the United States Air Force Thunderbirds from 1954 until 1957. He then served as a flight instructor. During his time as a flight instructor, he was selected by NASA for the space program in April of 1966 where he was a member of the astronaut support crews for Apollos 7, 11, and 14. Pogue served as the pilot of Skylab 4, the third and final manned visit to the Skylab Space Station. Skylab 4 launched on November 16, 1973, and concluded its mission on February 8, 1974. At 84 days, 1 hour, and 15 minutes, it held the record for the longest manned space exploration for twenty years. Pogue, along with Gerald Carr and Edward Gibson, logged 34.5 million miles during the flight making 1,214 revolutions of the earth.
