Obituary for Larry Joseph Chavez Sr.

Larry Joseph Chavez, aged 75, departed this world on the evening of Wednesday, October 18, 2023 surrounded by his family at the university of Kansas medical center. He entered this life on August 7, 1948, in St Joseph, MO. Born to Jesse Chavez and Esperanza (Hope) Martinez.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents, as well as his brothers, Jesse and John Chavez, his grandson, Dominio Chavez and his stepfather Gus Martinez.

He leaves behind a loving family, including his wife, Linda; daughter Maryhelen Loya (Shane) sons Larry Chavez Jr. and Steven (Vanessa) Chavez; and cherished grandchildren Richard (Deonne), Ashton, and Isabella Loya, as well as Donovan, Anissa, Amaya and Sayde Chavez; great-grandchildren Emilio and Nicolas Loya; brothers, Daniel (Pam) Chavez and Tom (Marolyn) Chavez; and his sisters, Delores (Walt) Meyers, Ramona (Bill) Atkinson, Margaret (Ladd) Imm, Frances (Craig) Wahlert, Mary (Steve) Merritt and countless in-laws and nieces and nephews.

Larry graduated from Christian Brothers high school in 1967 where he ran track under the coaching of his brother John, his senior year he won the city and MEC conference in the 800. After high school Larry enlisted in the Air Force where he was stationed in Germany at Ramstein Air Force base. He worked for Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad for 36 years as a Carman. Larry and Linda were married July 26 for 50 years. Larry was an avid supporter of the Kansas City Chiefs and the Kansas Jayhawks. He enjoyed playing horseshoes and loved nothing more than his family, and spending time with his children and grandchildren. Special thanks to his wife for all of the loving care she provided.

A visitation for Larry will be held on Thursday, October 26, 2023, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Holy Name Catholic Church, located at 1001 Southwest Blvd, Kansas City, KS 66103. Following the visitation, a funeral mass will commence at 11:00 AM, and Larry will find his final resting place in Maple Hill Cemetery after mass.
