Sroul (Srul I in Russian records; Yizrael or Israel in Yiddish and Hebrew) was born 15 Sept. 1859 in Zlatopol, Ukraine (then under Russian Empire occupation). Zlatopol is 2 miles from Novomyrhorod, and 35 miles northwest of Elizavetgrad.

His obituary in Le Matin, in translation, reads: "We regret to announce the death of Mr. I. Poberejsky, who died in his
home, 14, rue Cimarosa. The funeral will take place on Wednesday the 30th. We
will meet at the main gate of the Montparnasse Cemetery, at 11 p.m. He ???. not
letters will not be sent, this notice taking its place. From Mrs.
I. Poberejsky, his widow, of Mr. and Mrs. Jacques Poberejskv, his children, and the
Poberejsky families." — Le Matin (29 June 1926)

At one point he was a watchmaker in Ukraine, but by the end of his life in France he appears to have been a refrigeration engineer.
Plot location: 7.2.2.28

His parents were Jewish -- Avrum Leyb Yankelovich POBEREZHSKY (born 1840) and Khava.

While Jewish families sometimes named a child after an older sibling that died in infancy, this household named a later son the same as his older brother, both of whom lived to adulthood. Oddly, there was a Srul I (this Srul) and a younger Srul II. Possibly the parents may have wanted to pretend to have only one male child (Srul) instead of two to avoid military draft or taxation. The motive is unclear, but in any case the existence of a Srul II can be confusing for family historians!

Srul I married Esther Mendelova SEREBERNNIK (born 1866) of Radzivilov, Ukraine sometime around 1884. By 1885 they had a son Yankel / Yakov (later Josif / Jacques). By 1897 the family lived in Odesa. It seems that they moved to France sometime after a 1912 record of them in Ukraine (though they may have already emigrated by then).
