Wilford C. Spooner, 71, Tama Businessman for 25 Years, Dies
Wilford C. Spooner, 71, retired former Tama grocer, died Monday morning, January 29, 1973, at Marshalltown Area Community Hospital West where he had been a patient for nine days. He had been in failing health for three years. Death was attributed to cancer.
The family requested that the casket be closed at noon Thursday and remain closed for the services which were scheduled for 1:30pm Thursday , Feb. 1, at the Mason-Hand Funeral Home with the Rev. Harlan T. Grant, pastor of the United Methodist church officiating.
Mrs. Robert Malin will play selections on the organ.
Caring for the floral tributes will be Mrs. Alvin Kouba and Mrs. Donald Polka.
Casket bearers will be Harry Benda, James Booth, Alvin Kouba, ayne Porter, Walter Davis, and Arnold Atchison. Interment will be in Oak Hill cemetery, Tama.
The family requests that memorials be directed to the Cancer Fund.
Born Jan. 21, 1902, in Tama, Iowa, he was the son of William F. and Georgianna Eckmann Spooner. He attended the Tama schools and grew to manhood in the Tama-Toledo community. He was married to Miss Janet Heller of Dubuque on March 18, 1935, in Marshalltown. The couple resided in the Tama-Toledo communities their entire married lives. Mr. Spooner owned and operated a grocery store on Fourth street in Tama until 1960, when he retired after 25 years in the business.
He was a member of the United Methodist church in Tama.
Surviving are his wife, Janet; a daughter, Mrs. James (Merrilee Jo) Hammond and two grandsons, Douglas and Christopher Hammond, of Marshalltown; a brother, Fred L. Spooner of Tama, and a sister, Mrs. Charles (Maxine) Bowles of Detroit, Mich., and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a son, William; his parents, two sisters, Mrs. Irene Olson, and Irma Spooner; and three brothers, Glen, Leon E., and Earl C. Spooner. Irma and Glen died as young children.
