Harry Barranger Obituary

Harry Barranger Jr, of Virginia Beach, Virginia died peacefully on October 26, 2023 just shy of his 102nd Birthday. He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on November 30, 1921. He was a long time resident of Norfolk, Virginia prior to moving to the Atlantic Shores Retirement Community in Virginia Beach in September 2003. Harry was preceded in death by his loving wife Susan Carolyn Barranger after 59 years of marriage, his brother Edwin Barranger, and sister Edith Jennings. He is survived by his daughter Linda Sawyer and her husband Robert Sawyer and their two children Jeremy (Erin) and Morgan (Quincy) and his son Fred Barranger and his wife Lisa Barranger and their two children Alex (Gina) and Katie (Antoine). Harry has four great grandchildren, Brooklyn, Brynlee, Tristan, and Memphis. Although born in Philadelphia, he was raised by his grandparents in Asbury Park, New Jersey. Harry enlisted in the U.S. Navy, September 1942 and retired from Active Duty as a Senior Chief Disbursing Clerk on March 1962. Harry served in Arzew, Algeria and Naples, Italy during World War II. During his 20 year Navy career, Harry served aboard numerous ships and at multiple duty stations both foreign and domestic. When stationed in Norfolk, Virginia in 1952, Harry decided to make Norfolk, Virginia his permanent home. After retiring from Active duty, Harry continued to work for the U.S. Navy as a Shipboard Auditor for the Navy Regional Finance Center, Norfolk starting in March 1962 and retiring in December 1976 after serving his country for 34 years. Harry was active in the church and was a member of Christ United Methodist Church, Norfolk, Virginia and later a member of Nimmo United Methodist Church in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Harry was also very active in the Masons. He was a member of Norfolk United Royal Arch Chapter #1, exalted (joined) December 1, 1950. He served as Worshipful Master in 1971. He is a current member of the Norview Masonic Lodge #11 and was a Past Master of Charles T. Morton Lodge #232 in 1983. Family and friends are invited to attend the graveside service at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, Masonic Section, 6329 E. Virginia Beach Blvd., Norfolk, Virginia on November 3, 2023 at 10 a.m. You are also invited to attend the Memorial Service at the Atlantic Shores Retirement Community Clubhouse, 1200 Atlantic Shores Dr. Virginia Beach, Virginia at 1pm that afternoon.
