Fern was the daughter of Phillip LeRoy Allen & Letty/Lettie Litchard of Allegany County N., being the fourth of five children: Pearl, Hernie, baby Allen (male), Fern & Rosine. She graduated from Cornell University in 1920 with a bachelor's degree in English and from Syracuse University with a degree in library science. She was librarian at Syracuse University from 1932 to 1967 and was former librarian at the Kinderhook Memorial Library. Her sister, Rosine (Allen) Taylor is buried in the same cemetery.
