Anna Caracciola, 91, died March 14, 2011, at Crescent Manor Care Centers, following a brief illness. She was born in Gourock, Scotland, May 22, 1919, the daughter of Frederick William Dexter Smith and Catherine (MacKenzie) Smith. Her family moved to the United States when she was five. She graduated from Bennington High School in 1937. She married Joseph Caracciola in 1941. He died in 2002. Mrs. Caracciola worked in the New York Store in Bennington and with her husband at his store, Joe's Open Air Market. She was also a real estate agent with Caracciola Real Estate Agency. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Bennington and Red Mountain Chapter Order of the Eastern Star. She was also active in local politics. Survivors include three nieces, Ann Smith of Bennington, Wilhelmina "Billie" Smith of Wallingford, Conn., and Catherine Bergquist of Pittsford. The memorial service will be held at a later date.
