Dr. Adams graduated from Harbison High School (Irmo, South Carolina) in the Class of 1949. After graduating from high school, she began her collegiate journey at Allen University (Columbia, South Carolina,) earning a Bachelor of Art Degree in English. She then proceeded to earn a Master of Education from Carnegie Mellon University, (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) and a Doctoral Degree from Peabody College (Nashville, Tennessee.) She was a dedicated member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Dr. Adams was an educator for over thirty-one years (31) and began her career in the Lower Richland District Five (5) where she taught from 1958 until 1967. During the 1967 – 1968 school year Lower Richland District Five (5) was consolidated with the present-day Richland County School District One (1.) In 1971 Dr. Adams came to work at Keenan High School and remained there until she retired in June 1988. She was also chairperson of the English Department until her retirement from Richland County School District One.
After her retirement, from Richland School District One, she relocated to Bloomington, Indiana. Dr. Adams joined with the Bethel AME Church where she served on the Stewardess Board, taught Sunday School and Children's Church. Her favorite hymn throughout her life and the anthem of her spiritual journey was "Amazing Grace." In her spare time, Dr. Adams volunteered at the Arlington Heights Elementary School Library and assisted the Brownie Troop of the Girl Scouts with activities. She also enjoyed her garden, growing gladiolus and tomatoes every year.
In addition to her parents, he was preceded in death by her beloved husband of over 50 years, Alvin Adams, Sr.; and her children Dianne and Alvin Jr.; her brothers Jeremiah, Jasper and John Henry Nelums and her sister Dorothy Bowman.
She leaves to cherish precious memories, her devoted granddaughter, Meredith Evans; nephews John Calvin, Chris Nelums and Deacon Oscar N. Edmunds; nieces; Patricia Nelums Williams all of Columbia, and Shirley Edmunds of Ridgeway, South Carolina and a host of other relatives and friends.
