Flavil was a tobacco and cattle farmer and a deacon at the Fountain Head Church of Christ in Portland, Tennessee. He and his wife, Mamie Ruth, had two children, Donald Odell Gregory and Deborah Lynn Gregory.

Center Point School in Portland, TN.(original photo in possession of Donald Odell Gregory, son of Flavil Gregory). Flavil was proud that the teacher, Mr. Edwin Ferguson, had asked him to hold the ball for the photo.

Flavil Gregory and his friend and future brother in law, Mitchell Summers, caught a bus in Gallatin, TN. to be civilian workers at Camp Forrest in WWII in Tullahoma, Coffee County, TN.
