James Michael Barnes, age 75, of Homewood, IL passed away peacefully and surrounded by love on July 5, 2023. Known affectionately by many as Uncle Jim. James spent his life fiercely loyal and loving to his family and friends.
Born in November 1947, Jim graduated from Homewood-Flossmoor High School. After attending Southern Illinois University, he came back home and spent nearly 25 years working for the railroad. A devastating accident at work nearly took him in 1998, but it was not his time to leave, and he miraculously survived. When he returned home, he was called Superman, because he proved he was "stronger than a locomotive". Jim knew he had more to give in this world, and that included walking both his nieces down the aisle at their weddings and become great Uncle Jim and Papa to their babies. He was always more a father and grandfather than an uncle.
Jim loved his dogs, loud TV, Chicago Bears, Notre Dame football, golf, and spending time at the range. He was a man that had a good sense of humor and would help anyone he could. Always generous, to know Uncle Jim meant you were well cared for. He always said, "I love you" and was never shy in his affection and appreciation for his people. Jim has always been a superhero to us.
James is preceded in death by his mother, Loyola (O'Rourke) Barnes, sister Deborah Barnes, adoptive father William Barnes and father James Sweeny.
Jim is survived by his sister Carole (Barnes) Umbaugh, his nieces Jennifer (Peter) Mackowiak, Monica (Chad) Ramsey and his great nieces and nephews Rei Mackowiak, Braden, Vivian and CJ Ramsey. He is also survived by countless friends that became family. Jim was easily and well loved by all that knew him.
A memorial will be held at another time, family and friends will be notified.
