Dorcas Johnson Hughes was born in Union District, SC. About 1812, she married Jesse Hughes, most likely in South Carolina. Around 1815, Jesse, Dorcas and their young family moved to Cocke County, TN, where they resided for about 5 years. In 1820, the family moved to the area of Tuscaloosa, AL. Then about 1842, Jesse, Dorcas and some of their family along with the Fox family, finally settled in Choctaw, MS.
Dorcas was the daughter of Benjamin Johnson III (1760-1805) and Nancy Ann (1765-1821).
