Imogene H. Baker, age 88, of Marion, passed away at 11:15 p.m. on Thursday, April 17, 2008, in Parkway Manor of Marion.
She was born on January 19, 1920, in Rosiclare, the daughter of James B. and Effie (Hubbard) Hardin.
Imogene was a graduate of Harrisburg High School.
She was united in marriage to Cecil L. Baker on May 9, 1946, in Golconda. Together they shared nearly 39 years of marriage until his death came on February 27, 1985.
Imogene and Cecil lived in Denver, Colo. for several years and while living in the Denver area, she attended the University of Denver. Upon returning to Marion, Imogene continued her education at Southern Illinois University of Carbondale, receiving her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1972 and her Master of Science in Education degree in 1974. During her time attending Southern Illinois University she was a president's scholar and elected to the National Honor Society. She also was an honorary member to Phi Kappa Phi, Kappa Delta Pi and Phi Lambda Pi.
Her working career was for 22 years with the federal government. The majority of her career was with the United States Air Force Agencies of Denver, Colo. After returning to the Marion area, she worked at the Crab Orchard Fish and Wildlife Refuge of Marion for several years with the last two years being with the United States Forest Service, Shawnee National Forest of Harrisburg, until her retirement on February 28, 1982.
She was a member of the Third Baptist Church of Marion and the Marion Business and Professional Women's Club. She also was a former member of the Marion Garden Club, Marion Newcomers Club and the Retired Federal Employees Association. In her spare time she enjoyed doing volunteer work with the Literacy Mission, the Marion Christian Women's Club and the Southern Illinois Women's Health Conference.
She is survived by two sisters, Helen H. Atkinson of Golconda and Ruby Lewis of Coronado, Calif.; three nephews, Gary Atkinson and his wife, Vera, of Pekin, Mark Atkinson and his wife, Kathy, of Raleigh and Craig Lewis of Coronado, Calif.; niece, Cathy Schmidt and her husband, Dennis, of West Jordan, Utah, other extended family and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and one brother, Glenn M. Hardin.
Arrangements for Imogene H. Baker have been entrusted to Wilson-McReynolds Funeral Home, 900 N. Court St., Marion. The graveside committal service will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, April 21, 2008, at I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Golconda, IL with the Rev. Roy Lee Baker presiding. Those wishing to attend the graveside service should gather at the cemetery prior to the time of the service.
