Husband of Hetty Orlena Alderson born 1831 in TN. They married in Jefferson County, TN 26 Dec 1852. His parentage is unknown. He was raised by Benjamin and Keziah "Kizzie" Smith, believed to be a brother of Absalom's father. He referred to Benjamin as "uncle". Absalom lived in Tennessee until mid 1850's, then migrated to Buchanan County, MO. He was the father of Cyrus, Oliver, Martha Jane, James J, Benjamin C, William Faris, Mary Lucinda, Walcott and Orlando Lee.

Update 09/01/2012- A family bible lists his father as Barnett Smith and his mother as Martha Staples (possibly Kizzie's Staples sister [see above]). Rev. Barnett Smith was the founder of the Economy United Methodist Church in Morristown, Hamblen Co., TN. It is not known why Absalom was raised by his Uncle Benjamin Smith, and in a letter written by Absalom in April 1846 to his cousin by marriage Susan Hume Smith, he wrote "..... That your caracter may stand as a distinguished star in the Path of your Posterity & give to them that which I had not (This I say with tears in my eyes) a Parrent to protect me in inficy when I needed it the most. " So it indicates he did not have a parent when growing up. Several Smith family researchers have tried to uncover the mystery of who his father was. Another family descendent of Absalom has a photo annotated that it is a photo of "Grandfather Barnett's barn".
