Little is known about the life of Aminta Ledesma Lachapelle, who is described as "a country girl of petite stature and gigantic patience, a simple person unimproved by more than the most rudimentary education, but kindly and good hearted." Divorce proceedings "had been started, on his [Trujillo's] initiative, in July 1924. . . . Trujillo had attempted at first to accomplish the divorce i the simplest and cheapest manner, by mutual consent. . . . Trujillo and Aminta had already appeared in Conciliation Court to see if the divorce could be avoided, but this was routine and, since Trujillo was determined to get his decree, nothing was accomplished. He also asked for custody of Flor de Oro. Trujillo's pressures on Aminta were such, however, that she obtained legal counsel. In the subsequent proceedings she consented to the divorce, but on more equitable terms than Trujillo had contemplated. He had been paying $25 a month, with great irregularity, for the support of his wife and child, who were still living in the little house on Padre Ayala Street in San Cristobal. Trujillo's salary at this time was $300 a month, together with various perquisites of office, including a car and chauffeur. When the divorce was granted in September 1925, the Judge of the Civil and Commercial Court in Santo Domingo approved a settlement that gave Aminta custody of Flor de Oro, ownership of the house, and support payments of $100 a month. The ex-wife then dropped out of Dominican history, living quietly and obscurely, at times with Flor de Oro, forgotten by Trujillo and by the rest of the world."
