Dr. M. Gene Newport of Birmingham, passed away on Friday, August 3, 2018 at the age of 83. Preceded in death by his wife of 43 years, Sandra Hull Newport, his parents, Marvin and Zola Newport and his brothers, Donald and Robert. His is survived by his second wife, Tommie Sue Newport, his children, Monty Newport, Bruce Newport and Brenda Capps, and his grandchildren, Laurel Newport, Hannah Capps, Matthew Newport, Thomas Capps, Regan Newport and Kadi Newport. Dr. Newport held a B.S. Degree in Business Education from Eastern Illinois University (1957), a M.S. Degree (1961) in Management, and Ph.D. (1963) in Business from the University of Illinois. He was a member of the College of Business Administration faculty at the University of Nebraska at Omaha from 1962-71. From July 1971 to March 1974, he was Professor and Chairman, Depart. of Business Administration for UAB. From March 1, 1974 to August 1997, Dr. Newport was Dean of the School of Business/Graduate School of Management, UAB. He held the title of Professor of Management and Dean Emeritus after retiring in 1997. Books written, co-authored or edited include: Labor Relations and the Supervisor, 1968; The Tools of Managing, 1972; Dental Organizational Management (with G. Robinson), 1974; Supervisory Management: Tools and Techniques, 1976; Management: Functions and Behavior (with R. Trewatha), 3rd Edition, 1982; Management (with R. Trewatha and L. Johnson), 3rd Edition, 1996; Management: Up, Down and Inside Out, 2000: Country Music for Laughin', Lovin' and Livin' It Up, 2001; School Administration from A to Z, 2002; More Country Music for Laughin', Lovin' and Livin' It Up, 2005; and Momma Used To Say, 2006. In addition, Newport wrote articles in business journals throughout the United States and abroad. Dr. Newport was a native of Albion, in Edwards County, Illinois. Visitation and a Memorial Service will be held at Ridout's Southern Heritage Funeral Home, 475 Cahaba Valley Road in Pelham on Saturday, August 18th. Visitation will be from 1:00 to 2:00 P.M. with Services at 2:00. An additional Memorial will be set at his final resting place at Memorial Gardens in Champaign, Illinois.
