Sister Gabrielle Maria Petitpas (Marie Jeanne Petitpas) SUSC of Jeanne Jugan Residence, Somerville, MA died January 20, 2015 at the age of 91. She was born in Cambridge, MA November 18, 1923, daughter of the late Samuel and Marie Anne (Turbide) Petitpas. In addition to her Holy Union Sisters, several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews survive her. She was predeceased by her sisters, Helen, Mary Poirier, Antoinette Derochers, Marguerite Devine, Ida Garmon, and brothers Pierre, Joseph, Albert, John and Wilfred.

Sister Gabrielle graduated from Notre Dame High School, Cambridge. She entered the Holy Union Sisters on September 8, 1943, and pronounced her final vows on July 26, 1951. She received a Bachelor of Science Degree from Catholic Teachers College, Providence, a Masters of Education from Boston College and an MA in Pastoral Studies from Loyola University, Chicago.

Sister Gabrielle's teaching career spanned over fifty years. She taught elementary and junior high classes in parish schools staffed by Holy Union Sisters in New York, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. She taught at Sacred Heart High School, Lawrence, and served as assistant principal at Notre Dame High School, Cambridge. She served as vocation director for the former Groton Province of the Holy Union Sisters. She was a guidance counselor at Bishop Keough High School, Pawtucket and served as principal of Our Lady of the Assumption School from 1986 until the school closed in 1998.

After she retired, Sr. Gabrielle volunteered as Eucharistic minister in several parishes and to the homebound elderly. In 2007 she moved to Jeanne Jugan Residence, Somerville where she was a Eucharistic minister as well as at Eastpointe Nursing Home, Chelsea. All funeral arrangements will take place on January 24 at Jeanne Jugan Residence, 186 Highland Avenue, Somerville, MA. The wake is at 9 a.m. followed by the Prayer Vigil at 10 a.m. and Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30. Burial will follow at St. Paul Cemetery, Arlington.
