Abraham served the Union in the Civil War In Company K, the 127th Colored Infantry. This company was organized at Camp William Penn, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on August 23, to September 10, 1864. It mustered out on October 20, 1865.

Abraham and his wife, Harriet, lived in Springville and other sections of Florin, a community that has now merged with Mount Joy. Between 1858 and 1875, most persons in the black community of Mount Joy and Springville/Florin, Lancaster County, PA attended Florin AME Church. Abraham served as a preacher there. During his tenure, the house belonging to him and his wife, Harriet, was destroyed by fire. Later on, the Florin AME Church was destroyed by fire. A committee was chosen to purchase land for building a new church, as well as a different plot for establishing a cemetery. Those serving were the following men: Robert Mitchell, Daniel Webster, Samuel Caldwell, George Caldwell, and Rev. Abraham Jackson. Aaron Zell, a local farmer, sold them land for establishing the Lincoln Cemetery which was located beside the Mount Joy Cemetery. Interments started shortly after. The new brick Madedonian AME Church was built at 116 Fairview Street, Mount Joy in 1912. From then on, most of the blacks in the community held their funeral services at the Mount Joy Macedonian AME Church, followed by burial in the Lincoln Cemetery (now a merged section of the Mount Joy Cemetery).
