Jefferson Bennett was the son of Joseph Bennett (1785-1869) and Sarah Elizabeth Fenimore (1812-1890).

Lived in Belleville, St, Clair County, Illinois; Marion County, Missouri; Payson and Richfield in Adams County, Illinois before moving to California around 1882.

Jefferson's first wife, Elizabeth F. Ray died in 1891 in Los Angeles County and buried at Pomona Cemetery. Jefferson later married around 1896 to his first cousin, Harriet M. Craycraft Atherton. Jefferson and Harriet's mothers were the Fenimore sisters.

Jefferson had two daughters: Laura Bennett Crabb (1866-1945) and Della R. Bennett Alfter (1872-1921).
