Mary was the daughter of Casimir Jarzab and Katarzyna Harast of Róza, Poland, where she was born. After emigrating to America, she worked as a maid in a Grand Rapids Michigan hotel. The family stayed in Poland, but kept in touch. On 29 July 1916, she married Stanley John Kieras in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Her grandchildren always called her Busia. One memory is of Busia hiding things and money by sewing them into clothing and sending back to Róza. The Szczesniak (later Sesniak) family lived close enough to walk to their grandparents' home.
