Dan was a son of William Franklin Sanders McCarty and Francis Adalyssa Goode McCarty

Dan, not long after graduating school, 8th grade, left home at the age of 16 to work in Vicksburg, Mississippi. He seen it as an adventure and a way to make some money at the same time. In 1889 an epidemic of Yellow Jack (Yellow Fever) came up the Mississippi River and Dan got it. When he became ill he was taken to New Orleans by ship where he would be given the best care. He died there several days after his arrival. Dan had been working with two of his cousins in Vicksburg. They were notified of his death but weren't given the name of the hospital where he died or where he was buried. Daniel died in a tent at a yellow fever quarantine camp. When a list of deaths was released their was a Daniel McCarthy on it. It has been assumed it's for this Daniel because the name, birth and death years and place of death match the written (Bible) and oral family history.

His brother, Abner, went to New Orleans some years later but wasn't able to find any record of his death or burial.

It was noted at the time that "recent white immigrants to southern port cities were the most vulnerable; local whites and blacks enjoyed considerable resistance".
