PITTSBURG - Cynthia Jolly, born Heighsintha Vaughn, 82, was called home at 7:01 p.m. Saturday, April 19, 2008, in St. Louis University Medical Center of St. Louis, and entered the gates of Heaven to join her beloved husband, Ernest Jolly, at the feet of her Lord.
She was the matriarch of a large family and will be missed deeply by everyone who knew and loved her.
Cynthia was born Nov. 8, 1925, in Madisonville, Ky., the daughter of Pleasant and Birdie (Troop) Vaughn.
Cynthia was united in marriage to Ernest Eugene Jolly on Oct. 8, 1945, in Marion and together they shared over 56 years of marriage, until his death on March 12, 2002.
Cynthia was a passionate quilter and seamstress who designed hand-sewn clothing for herself over her entire lifetime and for her children when they were young. Cynthia was strong, passionate and full of life, with many colorful stories of her life and her very large family. She loved her children and family and devoted her entire life to raising her children. Her hands were rough from cooking and cleaning from dawn to dusk and from the work required in caring for her family, but she never complained. Cynthia sparkled with an inner beauty for all to see. She protected her family with the heart of a lioness, always ready to defend. She devoted her life just to loving her family and they want to say, "We love you mom and grandmother, you were the best mother in the world and we have faith that you are in heaven continuing to watch over your children and family."
Cynthia is survived by seven daughters and four sons-in-law, Sherry Martin and husband, George, of Hurst, Joyce McMillan and husband, Jimmie Dale, of Carterville, Brenda Studeman of Pittsburg, Delores Kerstein and husband, James, of Marion, Diane Beers of Paulton, Linda Marshall and husband, Vernon, of Goreville and Tammy Wilson of Austin, Texas; two sons and one daughter-in-law and cherished friend, Ernest Jolly Jr. and wife, Erma, of Herrin and Clyde Jolly and Julia Schrader of Stonefort; 29 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Dorothy Hogan of Ann Arbor, Mich., and Hilda Young of Rochester Hills, Mich.; two brothers, Pleas Vaughn Jr. of South Lyon, Mich., and Donald Vaughn of St. Harper Woods, Mich.; two brothers-in-law, Howard Jolly and wife, Ruth, of Corthin and Billy Hartwell of Marion; sister-in-law, Ruby Simpson and husband, Jim, of Creal Springs; childhood friend, Dorothy Frost of Orlando, Fla.; and many more beloved family members and friends too numerous to mention.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sister, Martha Vaughn; and three brothers, James, Jerry and Bob Vaughn.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 23, 2008, at Wilson-McReynolds Funeral Home. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home, with the Rev. John Burnett presiding. Interment will be in Herrin City Cemetery.
