Anchorage resident Dorothy M. Onkka, 77, died Feb. 6, 1995, at Providence Hospital. A memorial service was on her birthday at Evergreen Memorial Chapel, downtown, for family and close friends. Another memorial was held in the summer during Colony Days, at which time her brothers and sisters scattered her ashes in Hatcher Pass, a special place to her.

Mrs. Onkka was born Feb. 9, 1917, in Antigo, Wis., the oldest child of William and Lulu Bell Bouwens. She came to Alaska with her parents, six brothers and four sisters in 1935, as a part of the Matanuska Colony project. It was there she met another colonist, Oliver Onkka. They were married in 1937. Mrs. Onkka was active in many Valley organizations including Wasilla Presbyterian Church, Eastern Star, Rainbow, Pioneers of Alaska, Wasilla Seniors, National Association of Retired Federal Employees and Wasilla Homemakers. She leaves many wonderful friends in these organizations, her family said.

Surviving are her husband, Oliver of Anchorage; two children, Jean Farmer of Anchorage and Russell Onkka of California; three grandchildren, Valerie Khoobbagha of California, Steve Farmer of Anchorage, Russell Onkka Jr. of California; one great-grandson, Idan Tyler Khoobbagha of California; four brothers, Jim Bouwens of Wisconsin, Billy Bouwens of Anchorage, Wayne Bouwens of Palmer and Ronnie Bouwens of Arizona; and two sisters, Audery Linnebur of Palmer and Skip Martin of Arizona.
