Robert "Bob" Lloyd Sander, 83

Robert Lloyd Sander, our best friend and biggest supporter, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 18, 2023, at home in Fort Worth, Texas. He has joined his parents, Bert and Marie Sander; and siblings, Clifford, Wilfred "Shorty", Esther, and Adrian Sander.

Born in Fergus Falls, Minnesota, to Bert and Marie (Boeder) Sander on July 6, 1940, Robert was the youngest of five children. With siblings 15-25 years older, most of his childhood on the family farm was spent as if he was an only child - exploring, whittling, caring for animals, and spending quality time with extended family.

Robert proudly graduated from Underwood High School in 1958, where he played varsity football for the Rockets. He later married Laurie Kay Wait of Fergus Falls, and together they had one daughter, Renee'. A job opportunity moved the young family to Fort Worth, Texas in 1967, and from that point on, Robert was a Texan.

A lifelong learner, Robert was a talented machinist with many achievements. He spent 23 years at Andrews Tool Company before retiring in 2019. It was the happiest he had been in any of his professional roles, but his favorite job was being Grandpa. Grandpa was a great listener, a source of experienced advice, a walking encyclopedia, and always ready if you needed a pep talk. He loved treating the family to dinner on Friday nights and loved a good joke or gag...

One time, teasing his granddaughter Amanda (who was around 8 years old), he placed her Dolly Dolphin Sea World lunchbox above a set of vertical blinds as if it had vanished. Amanda was laughing when she discovered the lunchbox up so high, but when he reached for it, it fell to the kitchen floor, and one of the plastic clasps broke. Amanda was devastated, and so was he. He vanished to the garage for several hours, only emerging once he had machined a perfect replacement clasp from aluminum. He felt bad about that for years, but Amanda learned that Grandpa could fix anything.

Robert loved to read, was fascinated by space, and had a soft spot for animals, especially the family cat. He recognized every birthday, anniversary, and holiday with a card and knew exactly how many miles the drive was from his front door to yours. He was consistently generous with his time, energy, and resources and often stressed how important it was to be fair to one another. He took great pride in the accomplishments of his family, but we all agree that everything we have is because of him.

He is survived by his companion, Laurie Fitzgerald of Fort Worth, Texas; Daughter, Renee' Wood of Fort Worth, Texas; Granddaughter, Amanda (Jake) of Graham, Texas; Grandson, Marvin (Ab) of Seattle, Washington; and Great-Grandsons, Bentley Preston and Justin Robert of Graham, Texas.

There will be no memorial service. In place of flowers or donations, please do something kind and unexpected for someone else in the memory of Robert L. Sander.
