Mahlon was one of five children born to Brevet Brigadier General William Henry Noble and his wife Harriet Jones.
(William Henry Noble served during the Civil War as Colonel and commander of the 17th Connecticut Volunteer Infantry. He was Brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on 13 March 1865 for "meritorious services".)
