Mr. Edward Lee Benton, Sr., affectionately called "Teacake" was born in Nacogdoches, Texas on September 8, 1939 to Otis and Orsive Benton. On Thursday, January 27, 2022, Edward went home to be with his Lord. He moved to Port Arthur, Texas with his family in his adolescent years and attended the city's public schools. He graduated from Lincoln High School (The Mighty, Mighty Bumblebees) with the Class of 1959 and matriculated at Prairie View A & M University on a football scholarship.

Life changed for Edward and he moved back to Port Arthur and accepted employment with Great Lakes Carbon Corp as a heavy equipment operator, where he worked for 22 years until his retirement in 1985. It was also after returning to Port Arthur that he met Audie Jean Stewart, who would become his loving wife on November 17, 1961. Their marriage was blessed with five beautiful children.
