LOGANSPORT Richard H. Bancroft, 84, a Logansport resident since 2008, formerly of Riverside, Calif., passed away at 1 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2012, at Chase Center.
Born Jan. 15, 1928, in Springfield, Ohio, he was the son of Richard H. and Marjorie Richey Bancroft. On Aug. 16, 1952, in Trinity Episcopal Church, Logansport, he was married to Maryellen Bradfield Buchanan, who preceded him in death March 2, 2010.
Richard graduated from Purdue University in 1953 with a bachelor's degree in physics and communications and a minor in geology. His college education was interrupted by a tour of duty in the U.S. Army, where he was assigned to the engineering corps in Kyoto, Honshu, Japan from 1946-48.
For many years he resided in Colorado, working as an engineer for the development of digital television and the Titan Missile project.
Later, in California, he worked on everything from aircraft navigation systems to lawn sprinkler controllers.
Richard and his wife, Maryellen, bred and showed Arabian horses.
They were actively involved in the very first U.S. National Championship show in Estes Park, Colo., in 1958, at which Richard was an announcer.
In 1978, Richard and his wife were instrumental in the restoration of Trinity Episcopal Church's large stained-glass chancel window, which had been severely damaged in a hail storm in the 1950s.
Surviving are sons, Bruce Bancroft and Michael (Robin) Bancroft, all of Riverside, Calif.; a brother, Jim Bancroft, of Bean Blossom, Ind.; and several cousins.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Trinity Episcopal Church with Father Clark Miller officiating. Interment will be in the Columbarium at Trinity Episcopal Church.
Friends may call one hour prior to the service in the church.
Memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Episcopal Church, 319 Seventh St., Logansport IN 46947.
To those who will miss him, here is a quote from a letter Richard wrote on his 24th birthday: "Down through the years I have been deeply in love with nature and the forces behind her — I suppose back of all you might say — God — whom I prefer to call by the endearing term of 'my friend on the bed post' but I see him in the glittering, cold, but yet, to me, friendly glowing of the stars who look down upon me year after year as if to say, 'we're still here, how goes the night with you?'"
Kroeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Condolences may be left online at kroegerfuneralhome.com.
