Author, Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 Survivor. José Luis Nicolás Inciarte Vázquez, known widely as Coche Inciarte, gained notoriety from his survival following the crash of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 on October 13, 1972, which was transporting the Old Christians rugby team. Though not directly affiliated with the team, he joined the trip at the behest of friends, including Gastón Costemalle. Famously known as the Andes flight disaster and as the Miracle of the Andes, this incident has been extensively documented in numerous books, multiple television accounts, documentaries, and films. At 24, Coche was among the sixteen survivors who confronted exceedingly harsh conditions after the crash in the Andes Mountains, situated 3,600 meters above sea level and close to the Chilean border. Throughout the grueling 72-day wait for rescue, Coche exhibited immense physical and mental fortitude, enduring extreme hardships. Despite the circumstances, his positive spirit remained resilient; he refrained from complaining and made efforts to sustain high morale among the survivors. Following his rescue, Coche Inciarte married his childhood girlfriend, Soledad, and they began a family with three children. He devoted himself to the dairy business, eventually becoming one of Uruguay's prominent dairy producers. He also shared his experiences through motivational speeches and penned the autobiographical book "Memorias de los Andes" (Memories of the Andes) in 2018, recounting his encounters and reflections following the accident. His inspiring narrative was also portrayed in various films, including "Alive" (1993) and "The Society of the Snow" (2013), highlighting his fight for survival in the mountains. Coche Inciarte died on July 27, 2023, at 75, after facing health challenges in his later years. He was the second survivor to die following the death of Javier Methol in 2015.
