Belva married Dr. Calvin B. Smith on December 22, 1954 in Welch, OK. He preceded her in death in 1994. She was also preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Omer Twitty.

Belva loved her family dearly and her community. Belva enjoyed the many friendships she had as a long time member of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and the United Methodist Women's group. Belva was also a member of the Baxter Historical Museum and served as a docent.

Belva thought the greatest joy of all was being with family. Belva stated that one of her greatest accomplishments in life was raising her children – and the families that they've created. Belva said her greatest treasure in life was the years she was able to spend time with her 9 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.
