Versie Beggs Riley, of Roanoke, died Tuesday morning at 8 a.m. as birds played outside her window, May 16, 2000, in Bedford, while in the care of son and family, Woody, Vernon, William, Randy, and Barbara being also the close of kin.

Born and raised in Rock, W.Va. on January 20, 1926, daughter of the late William James Beggs and Sebina Walker Beggs.

She was also preceded in death (1968) by her beloved Woodrow Marshall Riley of the Hollins' Rileys; eight brothers, Ben, Charlie, Garland, Francis, Willie, Eugene, Lewis, and Vernie Beggs, many of whom fought valiantly in W.W.II; and three sisters, Eileen Anders of Richmond, Kathryn Evans and Vacy Stanley.

Survivors include two sisters, Violet Spicer and Lorene Gross and husband, Bobby, all of Rt. 2, Rock, W.Va.; and one brother, Everett Beggs and wife, Barbara. Special feelings to Iva Jean and Billy Hatsock and Henry Boitnott and Pete. And Becky White. God Bless All!

While a strict funeral service was declined, words of prayers were given at the moment of death by the nearest ordained minister as well as during her sickness. Cremation with no viewing was chosen, per her wishes, so as not to put anyone out.

It was her way. Many were her accomplishments in life. She always seemed able to get me to the hospital on time. Also, for three years she was the Manager of the first Holiday Inn Coffee Shop behind Archie's Lobster House. Her beauty and keen ability to deal properly with the customer have been emulated by many. She set the standard for Holiday Inns to come. Thank you. Good Samaritan Hospice. Thank you. Arrangements by Simpson-Tharp Funeral Home.
