George Washington Curtin was the son of Kate Ryan Bolger and John J. Curtin. He was born in Brooklyn, New York. Shortly after his birth, Kate, (a widow) and her two sons from her marriage to John Edgar Bolger, joined John J. Curtin in Socorro, New Mexico Territory, where she adopted Curtin's surname. They spent several years in Socorro, then moved to San Diego, California, where Kate resumed her employment placement business under the name "Mammoth Employment" in 1887. By the time, George was ten years old, his mother married a miner, William F. Hendsch. George and his mother ventured into mining and newspaper accounts show he made a claim in the Durzura district, likely San Diego County. By 1903 George was living with his brothers, Emanuel and William H. Bolger in Los Angeles where he worked as a teamster and truck driver. He and Alice Wiswell had a son, named George Buleigh Curtin in 1906.
