Mr. Michael Ahern, Clonakilty, Co. Cork, who has died, was a veteran of the fight for Independence.

He was the first captain of the town's volunteer company and was one of the first Clonakilty men to join the I.R.B. He was also associated with Sinn Fein, the Gaelic League and the G.A.A. He served terms of imprisonment in England.

One of his five sons was a member of the Cork team which won the all-Ireland football championship in 1945 and another is Rev. James Ahern on missionary work in Africa.

Death of Ardent Gael - The death took place last week of Mr. Michael (Captain) Ahern, late of Connolly Street, Clonakilty. Mr. Ahern who was in his seventies was an outstanding .member of the GAA and gave life-long services to the association. He was father of Rev. James Ahern, G.S.S.p,-Nigeria; who was a member of the Cork All Ireland team in 1945 and Rev. Sean Ahern; O.S.A. Callan Mr. Liam Ahern; Town Clerk; who played with the great Clonakilty teams in the forties, Mr. Michael Ahern, junr., Mr. Thos. Ahern, present fullback on the Clonakilty senior team, and Mrs. S.Hayes, wife of Mr. John Hayes, ex-Mayor of Hammersmith, London.
