ALBERT ADAMS OBITUARY
A man who served 30 years in the Marine Corps, Albert Fredrick Adams died at his home in Bayfield on Aug. 22, 2010. He was 81. Known as "Al," he was born to Albert Ronald and Winnie Mae (Giles) Adams on June 24, 1929, in Los Angeles. He attended Fairfax High School in Beverly Hills, Calif., and joined the Marine Corps when he was 17. Mr. Adams served both at home and abroad, for 22 years of active service and eight years in the Marine Corps Reserve. His military occupation specialty was tactical communications systems. He held the rank of master sergeant at the time of his retirement.Mr. Adams served a decade with the Marine Corps Rifle and Pistol Team and earned the honor of Distinguished Rifle Shooter with them. He was also a founding member of the elite Marine Corps Distinguished Shooters Association. While stationed in San Diego, Al met Margaret "Peg" Young. On Sept. 7, 1952, the couple married in Los Angeles. In July 1979, the Adamses moved to Vallecito with their two youngest daughters. At that time, Mr. Adams became a partner in the North End Boat Dock. The business was sold in 1984, and he began working for Barry Davis Construction and Snow Removal. A few years later, Mr. Adams took over a home-service and maintenance business in the Vallecito area. "He became appreciated and respected by many," his family wrote. "Following the Missionary Ridge Dire, he actively assisted his 'neighbors' who were devastated by the post fire mud slides." In 2005, the Vallecito Lake Chamber of Commerce honored Mr. Adams with its Claude O. Crane Award. After 27 years at the lake, Mr. and Mrs. Adams moved to Bayfield. "Al had a great love for his family and country, and made many sacrifices for them both," his family wrote. "He was a true patriot and believed in our country's Constitution. He fought in particular for our freedom and Second Amendment rights. Key points with Al were respect and honor." Mr. Adams was a life member of the National Rifle Association and a member of the Varmint Hunters Association 1000 Yard Club. He belonged to the Durango Gun Club. Mr. Adams served as chairman of the Republican Party at Vallecito. He was also an active member of the Vallecito Chamber of Commerce His family said he was an avid reader. "Al was the top and the best, a great team member and individual shooter," Chief Warrant Officer Retired Mike Pietroforte said. "He competed in every category, and was a member of all of the teams. Al was a top Marksman Marine Shooter, well-known and renowned in the Corps. He was a great Marine, and a great man." Mr. Adams was preceded in death by his grandsons Tony Garippo and Toby Adams. He is survived by his wife of almost 58 years, children, sister, 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 5, 2010, at the Vallecito Church.
