He was born in Janesville, Wisconsin on March 27, 1912. He attended Phillips Exeter Academy. He graduated from Yale College in 1934, where he was president of Dwight Hall Christian Association. He did graduate work in Economics at the University of Wisconsin. In 1947 he went to Shanghai, China as representative of the United Boards for Christian Higher Education in Asia, serving thirteen Christian colleges in China. From 1960 to 1963 he was comptroller of Tunghai University, a Christian university on Taiwan. In the last 35 years he has served in educational administration at church related colleges. Thirteen of those years were at the Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley, California. He moved to Tucson, Arizona in 1992, to the Santa Catalina Villas, a retirement center, where he continued community service, working for the Oasis Tutorial Program and mentoring local youth. He was survived by his wife, Jean Hastings Lovejoy, and his five daughters Isabel Best of Geneva, Switzerland; Linda Ewald of Washington, D.C.; Elizabeth Fulton of Berkeley, California; Margaret Baldwin of Orinda, California; and Helen Battad of San Jose, California, as well as eleven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
