Mrs. E.F. Harwood Dies in Her 74th Year
Mrs. Elizabeth Freeman Harwood, 73, widow of G. Louis Harwood both of whom for more than 40 years were identified with the Harwood Drug store on lower North street, died at Putnam Memorial hospital Tuesday night shortly after 10 o'clock. Although she had been in frail health for some months, her illness did not become acute until the last few weeks. She had been at the store assisting till she was last stricken.
Born in Troy, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Freeman. She had one brother, Willard, who died a number of years ago. Her schooling was received in the collar city and she was employed in that city as a young woman.
Her marriage to Mr. Harwood was solemnized in Troy in 1906 and she returned to Bennington with him to become associated in the drug store, which he had operated then for a few years. Mr. Harwood died in 1940 and since that time or shortly after, she had assisted Miss Mary Gibney in the operation of the store.
In her long time and faithful stand in the drug business, selling ice cream, candies, etc., Mrs. Harwood had come in contact with many people, who always found her accommodating and willing. The drug store was a gathering place for the younger generation of that neighborhood and other children in the community used to come there too. They always found a friend in "Lizzie" Harwood.
Mrs. Harwood was a devout member of St. Peter's Episcopal church, always taking an active part in every interest of that church. She also belonged to Mt. Anthony Chapter, Order Eastern Star.
The immediate survivors include three nephews; Roy and Theodore Freeman of Patterson, N.J. and Walton C. Harwood of Bennington; one niece, Mrs. Dorothy Hoffman of Philadelphia; a brother-in-law, Olin W. Harwood of Bennington.
The funeral will be held Friday afternoon with a prayer at 1:30 o'clock from the Gibney Funeral Home, followed by a service at 2 o'clock from St. Peter's church, of which she had been a long-time communicant. The Rev. George Heald will officiate and interment will be in the family lot at Park Lawn cemetery.
