Phoebe Leonard was the daughter of William Leonard of New York. The Leonard family was one of the earliest settlers of New Canaan Township, Marion County, Ohio. As a teenager, Phoebe enrolled as a student at the first log school house in the Township. Joseph Dodd was the young teacher, and Phoebe was one of his older students. They married at Denmark, Canaan Township, Marion County, Ohio on August 5, 1826, the first wedding held in that newly laid-out township.

Phoebe bore four children to Joseph Dodd: Calvin Riggs Dodd b. 1827; Rachel Dodd b. 1828; Hannah Dodd b. 1831; and Mary Shedd Dodd b. April 23, 1832. Unfortunately, Phoebe died shortly after the birth of her fourth child - around the end of April 1832 - and is buried in New Canaan Township, Marion (now Morrow) County, Ohio.
