Funeral of Carl Krans.

Galva, Ill. April 22. - (Argus News Service.) Funeral services for the late Carl Krans, aged 63, of Altona, Ill., a veteran of the Spanish-American War who died Sunday morning at a veterans' hospital at Dwight, Ill., were conducted yesterday afternoon in the Johnson Chapel in Gala. The services were in charge of the Rev. C.H. Malmquist, pastor of the Gala First Methodist Episcopal Church.
Two song selections, "I Never Knew" and "The Old Rugged Cross," were given by Mrs. Florence Atkins and Oscar Johnson. The accompanist was Mrs. Vernah Bowman Anderson.
The casket bearers included one veteran of the Spanish-American War and five veterans of the World War, Tom West of Altona, Frank Clifford, Elmer Bloomquist, Ralph Abernathy, Henry Larson and Gust Larson. Interment was in the Galva Cemetery beside the bodies of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Olaf [sic] Krans, pioneer residents of Bishop Hill.
Carl Krans was born in Galva in 1873. In 1900 he enlisted in the Spanish-American War. he remained in the army until 1911. Upon his return to civilian life he took up his residence at Altona, where he made his home until his death.
Mr. Krans never married. He was a painter by trade. His father Olof Krans, was the renowned painter of the "Old Colony City," Bishop Hill. A large number of the paintings are still to be seen at Bishop Hill and they are highly prized. Reproductions of them appeared last fall in Time magazine.

His WW1 draft registration gives his middle name as Raphael and describes him as having medium height, blue-gray eyes, and dark hair.

The 1930 Census (Altona, Knox County, Illinois) gives his marital status as single and his occupation as a painter/decorator of houses and buildings.

His military headstone application spells his name as Karl Krans.
