Born as Gustaf Emil Persson, Emil and his family left Sweden on 30 Mar 1883 via Göteborg, arriving in New York city on 23 Apr 1883. From there, they travelled to Duluth, St. Louis, Minnesota, where they made it their home.

Emil spent his entire life in Duluth and never married. He was initially working as a farmhand, general laborer, and truck driver during his early years. Then in 1933, he transitioned to the role of a Fireman on a Lake Freighter, a position he held for five years. Unfortunately, he had to resign due to stomach cancer, a condition that ultimately claimed his life.
