Anita Charles was born on August 2, 1923 in Freeport, New York, on the South Shore of Long Island. She passed away on January 11, 2024 in Potomac, Maryland at 100 years old.
Anita's family moved from New York to Washington DC when she was a young child where she spent most of her life. Among the few women of her generation to pursue higher education, Anita was a graduate of George Washington University and enjoyed a long career in the United States Capitol, including as Chief of Staff to California Congressman Del Clawson. Her hobbies included oil painting, tending to her balcony flower garden, and traveling – especially to Europe and to visit family in California. She was often accompanied by her beloved Yorkies, Alfie and then Archie who shared her apartment in Northwest DC.
Anita was active in her church National United Methodist Church in Washington DC, where she taught Sunday school for several years. She is predeceased by father Frank Charles, mother Estelle Seider Charles, older brother Frank (who sadly lived only a few months), younger brother Heinrich II ("Sonny," "Corky), and nephew Patrick. She is survived by niece and nephews, Heinrich III ("Rick"), Devitte, Maria, Kevin, and Peter, grandnephews and grandnieces Heinrich IV ("Hank"), Zack, Luke, Kurt, Nico, Elena, and Natasha, and great grandnephew Coen. Her life was enriched also by the love of Goddaughter and namesake Anita Ward, sisters in law Yvonne Charles and Regina Charles, and niece and nephew by marriage, Marcie Charles and Raymond Clémençon.
