She was the daughter of the legendary comedic actor Charlie Chaplin and his fourth wife, Oona O'Neill, and the granddaughter of the Nobel Prize and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Eugene O'Neill. Josephine appeared as a child in her father's film "Limelight" (1952) and as a young adult in his film "A Countess from Hong Kong" (1967). Although born in Santa Monica, California, her father settled in Switzerland in 1953 while she was a child, establishing their family residence at the Manoir de Ban, a manor house located on a thirty-five-acre estate at Corsier-sur-Vevey on the banks of Lake Geneva. As an adult, Josephine resided primarily in Paris, where she managed the Chaplin office on behalf of her family. She appeared in the Italian film "I Racconti di Canterbury" (1972), based on Geoffrey Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales, but much of her acting was in French films, including (but not limited to): "L'Odeur des fauves" (1972); "Nuits Rouges" (1974); "Docteur Françoise Gailland" (1976); "À l'ombre d'un été" (1976); and "Poulet au vinaigre" (1985). Her acting career included a number of television performances throughout the 1970s and 1980s, primarily on French television. She was first married to Greek businessman Nicholas Sistovaris, with whom she had a son named in honor of her father. She maintained a relationship with French actor Maurice Ronet that began in 1977 and lasted until his death in 1983. She was married to French archaeologist Jean-Claude Gardin in 1989. Their marriage lasted until Gardin's death in 2013. She was survived by three sons.
