Cynthia Joy Call Nielsen
Jun. 9, 1948 – Jan. 16, 2024

Cynthia Joy Call Nielsen of Livermore, California, passed away on Jan. 16, 2024, of complications from a months-long struggle with cancer. She was 75 years old.

Cynthia was born in Laramie, Wyoming, on June 9, 1948, to Tracey Gillette Call and Viola Ruth Clifton Call. She was the fourth of five children: Robert Richins, Cecelia Welch, Anita Call, (Cynthia), and Julia Bird. She primarily spent her childhood in Missoula, Montana and Corona, California before the family settled in San Luis Obispo, where she graduated from high school in 1966.

Cynthia earned a bachelor's degree in biology from BYU with minors in Chemistry and French. She had lasting memories from a semester abroad in Grenoble, France in 1968 and summers spent with friends and family across the west and in Alaska. A lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she volunteered to be a health missionary in Taipei, Taiwan, where she acquired her enduring love and appreciation of the Chinese people.

After earning a master's degree in biology, she moved to Palo Alto, California, where she met and married Dale E. Nielsen, Jr. They settled in Livermore, where they raised a family and spent 45 wonderful years together.

Cynthia served in a wide variety of capacities in church and community, gathering friends wherever she went. She was a member of the PTA, School Site Council, and was a frequent school volunteer and tutor. She served in many church callings, including a mission to Ukraine with Dale, a FamilySearch mission, and serving as an ordinance worker in the Oakland Temple for many years. Much of her free time was spent doing family history research for herself and countless others whom she helped introduce to their ancestors. She was a "mom away from mom" to many who boarded with her for summer internships or exchange programs and was anxious to invite any and all to be included and welcomed. Seldom did a friend or neighbor come to visit without leaving with produce from her garden. Her crowning achievement and primary focus, however, was being a devoted mother to her children.

Cynthia is survived by her husband, Dale; her children, Spencer (Carolyn) Nielsen, Christina (George) Bailey, Matthew Nielsen, and Elizabeth (Stewart) Low; and 14 grandchildren. She is predeceased by her oldest son, Joseph, her brother Robert, and sister Cecelia.

Visitation will be held at 9 a.m. on Feb. 3, 2024, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (1501 Hillcrest Ave., Livermore, California, 94550) with memorial services to follow at 10 a.m. Her interment will then follow at Roselawn Cemetery (1240 North Livermore Avenue, Livermore, California, 94551).
