Clyde lived at 418 Allison Street in Morristown. Clyde had suffered from a stroke and was a patient at the Morristown-Hamblen hospital for about two months, awaiting transfer to a nursing home. On the morning of September 22nd, 1963, around 6:45 am, Clyde was bathed while he was in his bed. After his bathing, Clyde secretly lit a cigarette, which caught a strong draft from a nearby open window. By 7:00 am, during the nurses' shift change, the hospital room was engulfed in flames. Clyde perished in the flames quickly. Another patient in the room, John Gentry, would receive severe burns and died later that night, due to his injuries.
