Mrs. Alice Elaine Plackett Sheppard, 91, was born March 31, 1921 in Paxton, Illinois. Her parents were Will and Dorothy Plackett. Upon completion of high school, she joined the United States Navy and was stationed in Charleston, S.C. She was a store clerk, in charge of Navy payroll. She gave payroll to men as they returned from the European War front. She paid one to Harold Eugene Sheppard, who was soon assigned to work for her. Asserting that he would not work for a woman, he chose a desk as far as possible from Alice's. The social life of the military workers consisted of playing games at night in the same Quonset hut where they worked during the day.
When the war ended Alice returned to her home in Illinois and Harry to his in Georgia. Two weeks later, she received a phone call from Harry asking her to come to Georgia and marry him. They married at Bull Street Baptist Church in Savannah on May 20, 1946. Together, they raised nine children: Harold Eugene, Jr. and Lynn Wells Sheppard parents of Evan Sheppard, Harold Eugene III (Tripp) and Crystal Sheppard whose children are Harper and Parker Sheppard; Patty and Charles Hill, parents of Shannon and Tommy Moore whose children are Raeb, Mia and Marly, Stormy and Jason Garland whose children are Bradley, Brandon and Barrett; Martha and Chuck Harris, parents of Jay and Tracy Harris, whose child is Savannah, Andy and Amanda Harris, all of North Carolina; Billy Sheppard and special friend, Ouida Hinely; Mary Kimbrough, Katherine Kimbrough, Will and Sarah Kimbrough, whose child is Grant; Sandra and Douglas Teston, Erin Reynolds, whose children are, Gage, Walker, River and Ryland; Jan and Jeff Davis, Stephanie Boan and special friend, Jay Bailey, Faith and Jaylee, Drew and Stacey, Natalie and Drew Harrison and Summer; Jill and Len Mock, Jared and Jessica Mock, Allison and Kenneth Woodall, Gracie, Caroline, and Nolan; Johnny and Joy Sheppard, John David, Carlie and Cassie Jo.
Alice planned meals and ran a house hold on $100 a week for many years. She explained that when more people showed up for dinner, she simply cut the chicken into more pieces. An active member of Middle Ground Baptist Church, Alice rocked hundreds of babies in her tenure as nursery worker. She hosted many youth parties at her house providing the social life of many Middle Ground teenagers. In her later years, Alice enjoyed her seventeen grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren. Alice is preceded in death by husband Harry Joe; brothers, Grant Plackett and Jack Plackett. She is survived by brother, Cecil Plackett, of Paxton, Illinois and sister, Anne Truex of Tucson, Arizona.
