age 86, of Dyer, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 2, 2024. Rita is survived by her loving children, Kelly L. (Jerry) Lambert, Matthew T. (Christine) Ashcraft, and Beth A. Ashcraft; grandchildren: Sarah E. Ashcraft, Jacob M. Lambert, Emily R. (Noah) DiRuzza, James R. Ashcraft, and Thomas D. Ashcraft; and brother Charles T. (Late; Pamela) Wells; she was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Marguerite Wells; and sister Judith (still living Richard) Dickover.
Rita was an advocate, friend, sister, cousin, mother, grandmother, teacher, and mentor to many. She was a spirited, strong, independent, and optimistic woman who, throughout her life, enjoyed a variety of activities including trapshooting, camping, fishing, Girl Scouts, teaching, volunteering, traveling, gardening, and playing bunco. She earned her bachelor's degree from Ball State Teachers College in 1959 and continued her education, earning her master's degree in elementary education from Ball State University via courses taken over a few summers while teaching during the school year in the 60's. She taught elementary education for 31 years, holding jobs within Indianapolis and Munster districts, Dyer Nursery School, Forest Ridge Academy, and Union Township corporations. Despite becoming a widow early in her life, Rita remained an active member of the community through visiting with friends, raising her granddaughter, volunteering with Girl Scouts and the public school systems, and becoming a member of PEO to help provide women with scholarships to continue their education. Rita was a force, a survivor, who lived a full life. She was well-loved by her family, friends, and community and will be missed by the masses, as her smile lifted the spirits of anyone who had the pleasure to meet her during this lifetime.
