Joseph Gutsmiedl was one of nine children born to John Gutsmiedl and Louise Obermueller. He graduated from St. Michael's High School in Chicago in 1929. He served in the Army during WORLD WAR II and was stationed in Europe. He married Elizabeth Mossman on October 24, 1942 at St. Alphonsus Church in Chicago. They lived in Chicago for a time and later bought a home in Evanston IL. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service where he worked as an inspector for many years. He liked to play cards and go fishing and his hobbies were woodworking and building furniture. He also enjoyed helping family and friends with remodeling projects.
