John served in the Infantry with Company E, 22nd Ohio Volunteers, and also with the Cavalry, with Company B, 5th Ohio Cavalry, during the Civil War. After the war, he was employed as a blacksmith near Cincinnati, and when his employer relocated to Evansville, Indiana, he came along. He retired approximately 25 years before his death. He was a member of Farragut Post No. 27, G.A.R. He died of pneumonia at the home of his daughter, and was survived by his wife, two sons, and three daughters.
