Charles was the son of Henry Athey and Nancy B Lewis. He married Bessie Verna Allen in 1903. However, she was already married at the time of their marriage. This was discovered later and she was sentenced in 1917 to three years in jail for felonious adultery (she was released after two years and she returned to her first husband). It is not known if Charles was aware of this at the time of his death. They appear to have separated in the year prior to his death.
