Floyd was the son of Samuel and Della McCormick Ake. He was their sixth child and grew to manhood in Pleasant Township, Allen County, Indiana, where he went to school and worked on the family farm.

Floyd enlisted in the United States Army on 9 April 1917 as a private. He was discharged as a sergeant on 18 January 1919.

Floyd was married four times. His first marriage was to Lurena Kurr Short on 17 October 1919 in Fort Wayne, Allen County, Indiana. They were the parents of four children: Wendell, Junella, Marvin and Delota. They divorced on 31 Dec 1940 in Hillsborough County, Florida. Second, he married Dona, known as Donie to her family, McNeil Eubanks on 31 Dec 1940 in Hillsborough County. She died on 5 June 1965 in Water Valley, Mississippi, possibly as the result of a roller coaster accident. Floyd and Lydia S. Cresswell married in 1966. They divorced in 1967. His fourth marriage when he was 75 years old was in 1970 when he wed Ruby whose last name is unknown to the family.

In 1920, Floyd was working as a laborer doing dredging. By 1930 he was working as a machinist in a wire factory. During World War II, Floyd worked at sea as a machinist. From 1944-1945, he served aboard the Thomas W. Hyde working along the Atlantic Seaboard. In early 1945, he is enumerated with his wife, Donna, in Hillsborough County, Florida, working as a machinist, probably aboard the ship Thomas W. Hyde.

Floyd moved around the United States more than most Americans of his time. When his daughter, Delota, died in 1983 he was living in Milwaukee, Oregon, near her family. In October of 1987, he was featured as a member of Northwest Veterans, Inc. with a photograph in "The Oregonian" daily newspaper.

He is remembered as a personable man with a hearty laugh. Even though he lived in many places he stayed close to his brothers and sisters and would periodically travel to Jacksonville, Florida, for Ake Family Reunions.
