Biography

of

Viola Victoria Stanfield

by Her Nephew

William Mortensen Vaughan

dated April 9, 2024

Viola was born to Victor Troy Stanfield and Violet Stella Mortensen, in Brigham City, Box Elder County, Utah, on April 21, 1918.

Violet married Viola's father, in Salt Lake City, Utah, on January 4, 1918. Since Viola was born approximately three and a half months later, and lived to get married and have children of her own, she was, presumably, the product of a pre-marital relationship.

According to the U.S. Census of 1920, Viola, at age two, lived with her mother, Violet Stanfield, and her grandparents, Rasmus J. and Josephine Smith, as well as several of Violet's siblings, including William W., Lilly L., and Millicent Smith.

Violet married John Lockwood, Sr., in Box Elder County, Utah, on November 2, 1927. She bore him a son, named "John Harold Lockwood, Jr." on November 27, 1927.

Viola's grandmother, Josephine, died, in Brigham City, Box Elder County, Utah, on February 11, 1928.

According to the U.S. Census of 1930, Viola, at age eleven, lived, as an adopted daughter, with John Lockwood, Sr., Violet, and John Lockwood, Jr., in Brigham City.

Violet married her sister, Hulda Amelia Smith's widower, Christian Hyrum Mortensen, in Brigham City, on March 1, 1933.

Violet bore Christian one child, a girl named "Merle Mortensen," in Brigham City, on February 13, 1934.

According to the L.D.S. Church Census of 1935, Christian and Violet resided, in Brigham City, with four children: Hulda, Milton, Maynard, and Merle. Hulda, Milton, and Maynard were born to Christian by his first wife, Violet's sister, Hulda Amelia Smith.

By 1935, Viola had, apparently, moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, to reside, perhaps, with her stepfather, John Lockwood, Sr. Her portrait appeared in East High School's Yearbook, in 1936, when she was about eighteen years old. John Lockwood, Sr., died, in Salt Lake City, on May 27, 1938.

Viola married James Clinton Hurley, in Salt Lake City, on May 13, 1937.

The U.S. Census of 1940 indicates that Viola and her husband resided in Los Angeles, California, with a two-year-old daughter named "Eyvon Hurley," and an infant named "James Hurley, Jr."

The U.S. Census of 1950 indicates that Viola and her husband resided in Oroville, Butte County, California, with twelve-year-old Eyvon Hurley, six-year-old James C. Hurley, Jr., and a six-year-old daughter, named "Joanne Hurley."

Viola's husband died, in Butte County, California, on December 19, 1960, where his remains were buried in the Memorial Park Cemetery, in Oroville.

Viola died, in Butte County, California, on November 27, 1990.

It remains unclear where her remains were buried.
