Mrs. Julia McMurtry Dies at Residence Here

Mrs. Julia McMurtry, 82, of 3308 University Dr., Clay County pioneer who had resided here for 20 years, died Thursday at her residence. She had been ill since suffering a stroke about five weeks ago.

Mrs. McMurtry was reared in Clay County and moved to Sanger, Denton County, in 1889, where she and her sister, Miss Nell Harter, operated a millinery and dry goods store for 25 years before coming to make their home with Mrs. McMurtry's daughter, Mrs. Grace Burroughs.

Mrs. McMurtry often looked back more than 50 years to the days when she played her violin and sang songs of the West chuck wagon campfires and springtime roundups in Clay and Cooke Counties. She still had her violin, a Russian-made instrument which has been in the family for more than 100 years, but she hadn't been able to play it since her left hand was injured in an automobile accidnet in 1927.

A highlight each year for Mrs. McMurtry was her birthday on Sept. 27, a birth date which she shared with her brother-in-law, the late R.S. Hilburn of Graham. They always celebrated the double occasion at the home of Hilburn's daughter, Mrs. Mary Matthews of Graham. Hilburn died in 1947 at the age of 102.

Besides her daughter and sister, Mrs. McMurtry is survived by two brothers, Frank of Dallas and W.J. Harter of San Angelo.

Rev. James Ansley, assistant pastor of First Methodist Church, will conduct funeral services at 2:30 p.m. Friday in the First Methodist Church of Sanger and burial will take place there.

Pallbearers will be C.C. Wagget, Bruce Shulkey, J.B. Graham, Fred McQueary and Walter Koons, all of Fort Worth, and George Hughes, Bud Gentle and John Nicholson of Sanger.
