He was a veteran of the Civil War, enlisting at Lyons on August 22, 1862 with Company D 138th NY Volunteers being sworn into service at Auburn NY on September 3, 1862. This regiment became the Ninth Heavy Artillery, which saw some of the hardest fighting of the war. He was shot through the lower jaw at the Battle of Cold Harbor, June 1864, and was sent home until December of that year. He eventually received an honorable discharge.
Charter member of the Newark Lodge I.O.O.F. & the Silver Links Rebekah Lodge, member of the William B. Vosburgh Post G.A.R., a longtime member of the Presbyterian Church, a Republican and was the village assessor for 11 years.
